Does Ontario Tech University student insurance cover counselling?
Yes, if you are enrolled in the student plan. Your plan pays reasonable and customary charges up to $500 a year for counselling with a registered social worker. If it treats our $150 student rate as reasonable and customary, a session would be covered in full, which is about 3 sessions.

*Rates reflect our $150 discounted student rate. “Your cost” is what is left after your plan pays its share; you would normally pay the $150 at the session and claim the plan’s share back. Coverage details are a general guide, so please confirm exact amounts with your plan.
What your plan says
Pays 100% of reasonable and customary charges, up to a combined $500 each benefit year. Registered social workers are on the plan's list of eligible practitioners.
See the plan page on Alumo.
Good to know
- Your plan names registered social workers, which is Sarah's registration.
- These figures apply if you are enrolled in the plan. Some students opt out, and some plan options pay differently.
- The out-of-pocket estimate assumes the plan reimburses the amounts above. Ask us on the free call how receipts and billing work for your plan.

Common questions
Do I need a referral for counselling under the Ontario Tech University plan?
The plan page we checked does not list a referral for counselling. Plans change, so confirm with your plan provider (Alumo) before your first session.
Will my family or my school know I am in counselling?
Sessions are confidential, within the limits of the law and professional standards. Sarah does not share what you talk about with your family or your school without your consent, except where she is required to for safety or by law. A claim shows your plan provider the date, the type of service and the amount, as with any health claim, but not what you talked about.
Who can book sessions with Sarah?
Sarah sees people who are located in Ontario, Alberta or Saskatchewan at the time of the session, online by video or phone. Sessions are 50 minutes, with 80 minutes available.
What if I have opted out of the plan, or my plan pays less than I expected?
Students can pay the $150 student rate directly. Book the free 15-minute call and we will talk through the options. If you are not sure whether you are enrolled, check with your students' union or plan provider.
